En los Premios Oscar, otorgados por la Academia de Cine, hay dos categorías musicales: mejor música original y mejor canción original; la primera es para homenajear todo lo instrumental y la segunda para premiar una sola composición.
El premio ha sido recibido por Adele, Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish y Finneas, Sam Smith, Bob Dylan, Eminem, Jorge Drexler, Elton John, entre otros.
La Academia suele publicar una lista con las 15 obras preseleccionadas para, después, dar a conocer los nominados oficiales. Este año los nominados en todas las categorías se conocerán el próximo 24 de enero, mientras que la ceremonia de entrega de las estatuillas se realizará el 12 de marzo de 2023 en el Teatro Dolby de Hollywood.
